In response to this event, some redditors created r/charityraid, with the goal of concentrating the power of thousands of users into a single charity at a time to hopefully break a few more sites.
As of 9/21/21, the site has updated with more wishes. The incredible spike in donations is amazing, but if you want to and are able to keep the momentum going, there are over 300 waiting to be filled at https://www.onesimplewish.org!
a lot of these are very basic, small things. i just spent 17 dollars to buy a kid water shoes for a lake vacation ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Since I came across this post the first time, I try to go to One Simple Wish semi-regularly and buy a foster kid something. There’s a wide range of wishes and prices available–you can pick something as little as a book to put under the tree, or as important as a set of pots and pans for a kid transitioning to their independent living setting, so you can pick whatever suits your budget and tickles your fancy. Help some kids who could use a good turn in life.
"internet historian's alt-right anyways" "great day to have never liked james somerton" "never even heard of illuminaughtii before this lol"
that's great buddy but don't go around thinking you're immune to this. if you're not looking for plagiarism, you likely won't notice it unless its egregiously obvious. hell, you've probably consumed plagiarized content without even realizing it. even hbomb pointed out that these people disguised what they presented pretty well as long as you didn't try and dig deeper. don't come away just thinking of this as a callout piece, take this as an important lesson about vetting your sources. if googling scripts in quotes was enough to expose the original, we should all start doing that shit!!
Look - I've been yelling about how much of a shitheel Somerton is for a while, and I am aaabsolutely gloating today, but this is really, really important, too.
For a little while, I got taken in by Illuminaughti, and I watched Somerton on and off until he said some shit that I knew wasn't true.
Part of what made Somerton in particular so insidious is that he positioned himself as the singular authority, which kept his (mostly quite young) audience from seeing through his falsehoods or noticing his plagiarism.
I say this not to blame people for not seeing through it, but to point out that one of the best ways to not get taken in by plagiarists or grifters like this is to consume a broad diet of queer media, theory, and discussion from a variety of sources. The way that this all came to light was people noticing, over and over, that his work was a regurgitation of The Celluloid Closet, recognizing the other YouTubers whose work he'd stolen, and on and on, and that happened - in part - because people were consuming that other queer media.
This has the added benefit of making it possible for you to spot things that might not be a direct grift but maybe just doesn't pass the smell test, or noticing - for example - the prevalence of bioessentialism in some queer conversations, or how common it is for TERFs to try to rope in young lesbians by pushing the line that lesbians are the most oppressed, or how little class seems to come up in our discussions. Or, you know, whatever.
If you got taken in, it's not your fault, but take this as an opportunity to broaden what you listen to, as that will help you sniff out grifters in the future. It ain't foolproof, but it sure helps.

At $20 each, this kit will include - but is not limited to - sanitary pads, a hair brush, tooth brush, toothpaste, cotton swabs, wipes, tissues, and other hygienic items depending on availability. Distributions will take place in various areas accessible to on-ground teams such as camps in Rafah and UN Schools.]
if you're european, you should 1) put pressure on your national broadcaster to withdraw from the contest. if the national selection goes through, then 2) pressure the individual artist(s) to withdraw from the contest. if come may, and israel is still participating, you should 3) boycott eurovision as a viewer, 4) pressure local establishments (clubs, gay bars etc.) to cancel their eurovision events, 5) intensify the pressure against your national broadcaster and its representing artist(s). never let them forget, even for a moment, the genocide they're complicit in.
also, if you're swedish, you have a special responsibility to protest as you're this years host country.
i just wanna emphasize that it's important the pressure is leveled at individual countries and artists, not the EBU as a whole. trying to pressure the EBU directly, be it through social media, emails, phone calls or whatnot, is likely just a waste of time.
the EBU doesn't care that they come off as callous hypocrites. but having individual countries withdraw from the contest? that's not only bad PR, it's also a loss of revenue
even just one country withdrawing as a direct protest against israel's participation is a big hit to the EBU. and there are already several countries i can realistically see withdrawing based on their previous reactions to israel hosting in 2019
also, for countries with a hardline pro-israel stance, pressure might be more effective if it's primarily be directed at the participating artist(s).
is it realistic, for instance, to get the BBC to withdraw from eurovision? no. but the individual artist...? with unrelenting, daily reminders that they're supporting a genocide? maybe.
at least we can ensure that participating in a nakedly pro-genocide eurovision will be a miserable affair for everyone involved.
